We Were Happy Once, We Were by Kenneth Pobo

My grandmother said Bailey
would hurt me.  Uncle Dave,
a closed garage door at the wedding,
no expression. My parents said
congratulations, seemed happy
but they often seemed happy.

We started out well,
like the year’s first crocus,
lavender in March sun.  Then
a short stormy spring--
I had guessed we’d be stormy.
We’re both stormy.

We look out the window at
unyielding gray,
held in its grip.

Kenneth Pobo has a new book forthcoming from Assure Press called Uneven Steven.  Also forthcoming is a chapbook from Moonstone Arts called Book of Micah.
