Coywolf by Antoni Ooto

What was that, crossing in our headlights?

In that moment close,
our eyes locked.

I knew her.
a Coywolf— slight,
smaller than a wolf,
mottled gray body,
cautiously unafraid;
her face, a pointed threat.
We had nothing to share.

And the road more ominous as
she steals the night again
on her path of instinct.

I missed my chance.
