Hawk's Nest, West Virginia by John Swain

Stone turret overlook
on the river clear breasted
as a red hawk,
the river itself
a hawk in reflection
spread
this woman
the river
keeping the valley
open between green peaks.
I needed
those guardians again
to hold and watch longer
than we either deserved.
Wonderment of the grace,
sky island
to lose oneself
by every tearing
and still remain
close to the own
being revealing.

John Swain lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Crisis Chronicles Press published his most recent chapbook, White Vases.
