Lady in Waiting by Donal Mahoney

This beautiful mule
of a woman
old and balky
squatting on
ancient haunches
and braying as I
pull on her rope
as hard as I can
so she will go
to the Botanical Garden
a place she loves
has a right to see
from her wheelchair
a cat on her lap
a rose in her hair
one last time.

Nominated for Best of the Net and Pushcart prizes, Donal Mahoney has had work published in Poppy Road Review and other publications in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Some of his work can be found at http://eyeonlifemag.com/the-poetry-locksmith/donal-mahoney-poet.html
