Columbus Day (Traditional) by Michael G. Cornelius

The leaves change.

Pigments cascade,
colors of harvest
and savage nobility,
and we gawk in
at their little spiraling deaths.

“Gather them all,
in piles and bags;
do not let them
cover our land.”

Do not give them
the simple right
to rest in peace.

Michael G. Cornelius has published poetry and short fiction in over 20 journals and magazines, and is the author or co-author of 4 books of fiction.
