Crucible by M.J. Iuppa

Does smoke talk with the clouds?

Sometime, while sitting too close
to the campfire’s embers, follow

the slow draw of smoke lifting
beyond its jittery sparks– watch

how it drifts like assuring voices
passing a story ‘round– as if it

were gospel– the truth whispered
to generations of clouds passing

overhead– watch how quickly
this carbon dissolves in water.

M.J. Iuppa lives on a small farm near the shores of Lake Ontario. Her most recent chapbook is As the Crows Flies (Foothills Publishing, 2008) and second full length collection, Within Reach, (Cherry Grove Collections, 2010). She is Writer-in-Residence and Director of the Arts Minor Program at St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY.
